Reading Across America (and Across the Grades)
Get students reading by planning now for Read Across America Day on March 2. NEA's Read Across America Day, which falls on Dr. Seuss's 102nd birthday, expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read. Encourage students to share the fun of reading with these cross-level reading activities.

Kick off a cross-level reading program with the ReadWriteThink lesson Book Buddy Biographies: Intermediate and Primary Students Working Together (E-M), by having students create personalized biographies for their reading buddies. Text sets provide a great way to share readings on the same topics or themes with both elementary and middle school students. For great ideas on using text sets with students, check out the ReadWriteThink lesson An Exploration of Text Sets: Supporting All Readers (M), which includes strategies that can be adapted for any grade level.

The Voices from the Middle article "You've Got Mail: 'Near-peer' Relationships in the Middle" (M-C) pairs preservice teachers with middle school students reading the same book. In their e-mail exchanges, these students explore the texts and delve into deeper critical thinking. The English Journal article "Creating Literacy Communities: High School/University Partnerships" (S-C) describes a similar project: paired secondary students and preservice teachers explore The Great Gatsby together by exchanging letters on the novel. Adapt the resources in the ReadWriteThink lesson Exploring Literature through Letter Writing Groups (S-C) to try a cross-grade exchange with students at your school.

For background on the event and additional information, visit the ReadWriteThink Calendar Entry (G), and watch next week for more teaching ideas for Read Across America Day, including specific strategies for all levels using texts by Dr. Seuss.
